A number of online sources reported that MyEtherWallet got hacked on 9 January. The information has quickly spread through Internet. However, developers of the wallet categorically deny the charges.
Initially, the entries about hacking MyEtherWallet were posted on Twitter by Ethereum Blue project. Ethereum Blue representatives announced that some MEW users were redirected from MEW website to a fake one, which stole funds from accounts. Therefore, Ethereum Blue team advised not to use MEW.
Nevertheless, the problem has not been confirmed by the MEW team. The first MEW respond was posted on the Reddit social platform. “I'm Wietze from MyEtherWallet. We are currently not aware of any compromises regarding MyEtherWallet and are investigating the claims by EthereumBlue,” a MEW representative reported.
Soon a more severe message from MEW team was posted on Twitter: “Trust is the most important thing in this community. Any team who spreads fear, creates chaos, and lies to people for their own selfish benefit can kiss my ass”.
This is not the first time when vulnerabilities of cryptocurrency wallets and exchanges are being discussed. Unfortunately, they were hacked and stolen more than once. One of the last examples is hacking of EtherDelta exchange in December 2017. At that time at least 308 ETH ($266,789) was stolen.
